Expertise for Water Ballast Treatment System Projects

Vessel operations and crew may find Water Ballast Treatment System retrofits intrusive. An expertly done WBTS retrofit maximizes conformity and reduces possible negative impact on all ship personnel. The success of an installation is determined by an interplay of factors. At FMT SHIPMANAGEMENT, the entire process can be handled efficiently by our highly trained experts from fleet inspection to sustained compliance after installation. While collaborating in an extensive range of WBTS manufacturers, our projects have entailed vessel-specific research, supervision of installation, software requirements specifications and engineering systems update. As a result of the collaborations with WBTS manufacturers, our experts are equipped with extensive knowledge regarding the advantages and vulnerabilities of all the major treatment techniques up for sale without giving preferential treatment to any dealer. At FMT SHIPMANAGEMENT, we aim to identify and execute the most suitable solution for your vessel.

FMT SHIPMANAGEMENT is dedicated to providing cutting-edge, innovative marine engineering solutions.

The following factors must be considered when preparing a ballast water management plan:

  • Open seas or mid-ocean organisms released near the coast have little to no chance of survival, and vice versa.Organisms will die if exposed to chemical treatment in ballast water. Thus, chemical dosing in ballast tanks is a possible alternative. Saltwater organisms will die if placed in freshwater, and vice versa.
  • Ballast water more than 100 days old is classified as a low risk since the micro-organisms would die from the absence of oxygen, nutrients and light. Vessels on a short expedition and are unable to perform ballast water exchange may consider discharge to reception facilities ashore as an excellent option.
  • Novel innovative techniques such as filtration, thermal techniques, UV treatment, and infection are another alternative.Marine bottom dwellers migrate to the top in the dark, so ballast water intake must not be performed at night.
  • Ballast water intake must not be performed close to sewage and industrial waste outlet.Ballast water intake must not be performed in seasons and locations of a phytoplankton bloom.Ballast water intake must not be performed in shallow water and in regions where sediments can be stirred up by propellers.
  • In regions where there is a widespread outbreak of communicable diseases through ballast water, ballast water intake must not be performed.
